Information for Prospective Students and Visitors

Thank you for your interest in my research program!

I receive many queries from students and academic visitors interested in working in my research group. Because I usually cannot reply to these queries individually, so I hope the following general information will be useful to you.

Prospective Students    Yes, I am always looking for motivated and talented students to work with me on interesting topics in programming languages, software engineering, and computer security.

If you are already a student at UC Davis and are interested in working with me, I'd be happy to discuss with you potential research opportunities. Please email me to make an appointment.

If you are not yet a student at UC Davis and are interested in coming to Davis for graduate studies in Computer Science, that is great because we do have a lot to offer. If you have specific questions about my research program, I would be happy to answer them. However, please do not email me your resume and other academic records to be evaluated for admission. I rarely respond to such emails. If you have a strong academic record, I urge you to apply. Please visit this web page for information regarding graduate admission in Computer Science at UC Davis.

If you have been admitted, I'd be happy to discuss with you research opportunities. Usually before deciding whether to take on a new student, I'd like to observe the student in my classes and also do some research work together for at least one quarter so that we may get to know each other better.

Prospective students may also wish to take a look at the article "So long, and thanks for the Ph.D.!" which may help you decide whether getting a Ph.D. is the right path.

Postdoctoral Researchers    I'm interested in having some postdoctoral researchers working in my research group. If you have a strong record in programming languages, software engineering, or computer security, please feel free to contact me regarding these positions. You will have the chance to work closely with my group of outstanding students.

Academic Visitors    I'm interested in having both long-term and short-term academic visitors. If our research interests overlap and you have own funding to support your visit, I'd be happy to discuss with you the possibility of hosting you at UC Davis. I do not, however, have appropriate funding to sponsor academic visitors myself.

I want to thank you again for your interest and wish you the best of luck!
